The crane arrived to lift the huge glulam beams and the big steel frame for the upstairs window. I don’t know why we thought we would lift all these by hand…just me and Ross!!
This one looks like a ‘bendy’ one but my side wasn’t fitted yet…Once fitted its straight!
There will be a vaulted ceiling in this house and all the glulam beams will be seen. That’s what we like - a bit of imagination!!
The hanger below is getting fixed to all the rafters on the dormers, I read up on them - you can fix timber to timber with these hangers and the timber doesn’t need to be cut to the angle to nail to the ridge beam!! That means the way things are going you could buy a house from ikea and use these hangers on the roof and you are a house builder???
On Thursday I dont know why Ross decided to dress up like a zoo keeper:
That was how far we got this week, next week we have to get it complete with fascia and gutters, then wait for the windows to arrive and that is us wind and water tight.
One night we decided to go for a swim! Joe told us about a beach just 15 mins drive away.
While we were there we took some pics, and If we are making a calendar then Ross will be Mr. July!! He done his hair before we went because he knew there would be a photo ‘op’
You can click on the photo to make it bigger for anyone who wants to use it as a desktop background!!
We were back to Mull on Monday and it was raining!! We started the floor joist to get ready for the next delivery of timber kit panels.
If you are planning a self build and want big open spaces in your house, these are the joists you want. They can span a much bigger length than your traditional timber joist, they are quicker to install and you don’t need as much compared to traditional timber joist – so everyone’s a winner!
This was us starting the 15mm O.S.B flooring – We need this to take the underfloor heating pipes then we have a 22mm chipboard floating floor on top of the pipes.
We were only on Mull until Wednesday morning because there was a bit of confusion with the delivery from Scotframe so nothing major to report. They delivered the majority of the rafters for the roof but didn’t deliver the first floor external panels. The roof sits on these panels so it was a pretty quick week for us, still pretty productive but we should have been onto the roof. Its all sorted for next week so the next update we should be wind and water tight!!
Have a look at the rafters from Scotframe – every angle cut for the hips, every ‘birds mouth’ cut out to sit on the top of the panels, all marked with a number or letter – pretty much idiot proof id say!
Another exciting thing that happened for the few days we were on Mull was that I ripped the scrotum of my trousers:
Its really windy where this build is happening so I need to get a new pair…..I dont want my wee man freezing up and falling off!!!
I’m just writing stuff like House Builders on Mull, Joiners on Mull and Isle of Mull Self Builders so anyone that googles these things then us – the A team, pops up close to the top!!
Eventually the timber kit was ready to be delivered – We headed up to Mull on Monday to get prepared for the kit coming on Thursday.
First thing was to move our home from the campsite to the building site – the campsite was good but its better being on site for the build. The van got stuck a few times but we made it!
There was a lot of tostesterone in the caravan and it was pretty ‘cosy’ for space, but before anyone mentions it – there was NO man love!!
We had one of our good friends there for the week helping out, after taking some photos we have decided to make a calendar and Ross seems to look good for Mr. October???
Below are some photos of the progress from the timber kit arriving from Scotframe www.scotframe.com on Thursday morning around 9.30am and we left Friday around 3.00pm so a good 2 days work.
You can scroll over the pictures to tell you what stage we are at:
The picture below is the view from the dining area – The windows are this width from the ground floor to the roof, should look great when its done!
We got a good amount done in the two days. So back up next week for the floor joist, the first floor panels and hopefully get a good bit done on the roof. I will need to get pictures of the Glulam beams that weigh about as much as a bus – Ross, Ross and myself lifted them from the front of the site to the house, about 30 metres, without a forklift – just serious man pwer and grunting! Im not boasting or anything!!
There is a few pictures below of the finished deck, Ross had a great idea – he wanted to get a boat and see how long it would take him to reach Canada!! He was sure he could make it out through the binoculars!!
The picture below is of ‘Roscoe’ When we first got there he must have liked my trousers or something - he was really munching on them – I thought I would have to do the deck in my ‘new’ shorts, it was only a greeting from him and he left me alone the rest of the build.
That is now Mull with a foundation (pic below) an insulated slab – Once the timber kit goes up there will be underfloor heating going throughout the house, this is why we have the insulated slab – I will have more details and photos of this getting installed at the time. Next stage for here will be to get the scaffold up then wait for the timber kit to arrive from www.scotframe.co.uk
So we have a foundation just finishing up on Mull, we had a bit of a delay with materials for a deck in Kilchoan. This left us with a Friday to go over some stuff that we will need in a few weeks time. After doing some ‘office’ bits and pieces we decided to hit a few balls in the garden.
I had just had my first experience of ‘Hall & Oates’ in a film I watched last week. I downloaded their album – tried to put one of their songs over this video - youtube wouldnt let me!! You need to use songs from compliation albums on any video you put on youtube. So no compilation with hall & Oates so I went with Tears for Fears.
